Nikon S-Ke Trinocular Phase Contrast Microscope. SUPER NICE

Time to clear out my classic microscope collection. I'm going to start by listing the really good ones, and move on to parts bodies and such later. Hopefully you've already researched the Nikon S series, and are looking at this because you know that it's a great value and a serious scope. Comes down to excellent performance, wide compatibility with some great inexpensive optics you might want to try, lots of options and accessories that are still widely available on the used market, great price, great range of capabilities.

The Nikon S series was a workhorse of labs around the world for about 30 years, and came in a wide range of models. This particular model, the S-Ke, is the best of the Model S breed, in my opinion. This is a good scope and in superb condition. There are no operational or functional problems at all. If you are obsessive about sparkling optics you could always clean more, but it's more than good right now, having been sitting unused in a cupboard for a while.

The scope is set up for both brightfield and phase contrast work. If you don't know about phase contrast equipment, please do a little reading. Bottom line is that if you want to observe living cells or microscopic critters that have not been stained, phase contrast makes this possible at a reasonable price. For example, when I first got it, I observed fungal strands growing out of the corpse of a mosquito collected from a pond surface - cytoplasmic flow inside the growing fungal hyphae could be clearly seen, as could bacilli clustering at the hyphal tips, which showed clearly as blue rods. This would simply not have been possible, or nearly as dramatic, under normal brightfield conditions.

Anyway, it's definitely worth it for the amateur to get phase contrast equipment, despite the extra expense. Mechanics: All gears and optics on this baby are in great shape, and all movements smooth and precise. Course focus has a locking feature that will prevent you from accidentally breaking cover glasses if you set it and use it regularly.

phase contrast turret with 10, 20, 40, 100x and brightfield settings, all phase annuli in perfect condition. Filter tray below (33mm) with 33mm green filter included. The condenser's high NA is a real bonus, and is noticeably better than the NA 1.2 versions. The annuli positions are adjusted by fingertip control (push them a little this way and that until centered), which actually works extremely well and seems to have held up better than fancier geared systems on other contemporary scopes. Objectives: All original Nikon objectives, 160mm tube length: 100x Phase, 1.25 DLL 40x Phase, 0.65 DLL 20x Phase, 0.40 DLL 10x Phase, 0.30 DLL 4x Plan, 0.1 I have found the DLL type phase objectives best for general use.

Head: Trinocular head, with three position selectable prism (image path switches between oculars only, both oculars and the camera port via beam splitter, and camera port only), camera port and tube (23.3mm standard), camera port cap. Oculars: Nikon Bi HKW 15x - corrected for phase contrast. If you prefer 10x, ask and I will substitute Nikon 10x phase-corrected oculars. Stage: X-Y stage, smooth operation.

Illumination: The S-Ke introduced one of the very best Kohler lighting systems ever. It's easy to adjust, and the easiest system I have ever used for getting great Kohler illumination fast. All systems from the bulb position adjustment on through the iris diaphragm and projection lens centering work perfectly. The red power indicator light on this one is intermittent.

Probably needs a new bulb. If you have any questions or want pictures of particular parts, let me know, a nd thanks for your interest! The item "Nikon S-Ke Trinocular Phase Contrast Microscope.
